Go to Walmart, look at some of those greeters. 3 feet tall, kind-sweet old great-grandma looking women working one heck of a lot of hours every week...standing in the blast of heat mixed with winter's chill, blowing right at them. That darned smiley face does not quite convince me that they are thrilled to be there. Our whole system is broken. Too many decades of "everybody and their brother" sucking welfare bucks, etc, and willingly doing NOTHING about it. Sign the check and life goes on. Well, now we know when life goes on..until. I'll work THREE jobs if need be, to NOT have my parents or grandparents out doing that work. As for the cottage industry....if the seniors like the work and want to do it, that's great. But if they are basically forced to do it to survive...shame on all of us for allowing that to happen. If we think that's bad, where do you think WE will be when we're there age? I doubt that we'll get much of a handout from the retired teachers. They've planned their lives all along, to drain the taxpayers dry, retire EARLY, and allow us to pay their medical stuff, etc, until they close the lid. How thoughtful!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23302571.post-1158864652859284062006-09-21T13:50:00.000-05:002006-09-21T13:50:00.000-05:00It still saddens me that our seniors have to go ou...It still saddens me that our seniors have to go out and find work to PAY SCHOOL TAXES. They've paid enough. The real solution is less spending and more fiscal responsibility.

My Dad worked from the time he was "5" -- YES FIVE years old until he graduated high school, then spent 6 years in the service and then worked the rest of his life. My husband has also worked since he was 8 years old, and is retired from his job of 42 years, but still working on the side. It's Property Taxes and Medical expenses that keep us both working. We're glad to have the house paid off -- but that was done with sacrifices of other things.

There must be a better solution than making older people, many with phyiscal problems, now go out to work in order to keep the roof over their heads, for a generation that doesn't seem to appreciate much.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23302571.post-1158856200251478212006-09-21T11:30:00.000-05:002006-09-21T11:30:00.000-05:00"Anything of interest to report from last night's ..."Anything of interest to report from last night's school board meeting?"

The board plans to make our Public Records very expensive to view.

See the new post on blog..."Oley Valley School Board Winks at Right to Know Law"Oley Concerned Citizenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16686840946027491442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23302571.post-1158844697751107342006-09-21T08:18:00.000-05:002006-09-21T08:18:00.000-05:00Could the junior and senior class start a business...Could the junior and senior class start a business that hires the able bodied, willing senior citizens? That would be a great project! Everyone would win. Many of our students have everything they ever wanted growing up, and don't see or realize how little some of our senior citizens end up with, and how much they do without. RESPECT...look into it. Where would we be without everything our parents and grandparents did for us? They GAVE all their lives. It is only fair to give back to them at this time. Most people don't want handouts, so if they're offered meaningful jobs that they can handle, I bet there would be a long line of applicants. Jobs could also be offered to any age person that wants to have their earning taken off of their tax bills. Many of these industries are overwhelmed by orders at holidays, etc, and end up losing business because they can't get enough help at the time they need it. I'm sure this is not a new idea, but it's one I have not seen as a suggestion for Oley.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23302571.post-1158842987491532722006-09-21T07:49:00.002-05:002006-09-21T07:49:00.002-05:00SPEND, SPEND!!!!SPEND, SPEND!!!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23302571.post-1158842982764651092006-09-21T07:49:00.001-05:002006-09-21T07:49:00.001-05:00To cottage Industry:What a wonderful thought. I particularly would love to see many more seniors at the school, working with and sharing with the children.

Regardless what people think and post, the kids (at all ages) are sponges and will absorb whatever is thrown at them. To be honest, discard the stupid senior class project (forced charity and community service) and have the children spend time with the seniors. Then the children will be much more productive and willing to perform the same services without the arm twisting.

Lets get rid of ten or so professional staff (suspension monitor, excess teachers in classes only a few elect to take, etc., and utilize those resources to expand the SMILES program.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23302571.post-1158842947962642062006-09-21T07:49:00.000-05:002006-09-21T07:49:00.000-05:00SNEAK, SNEAK!SNEAK, SNEAK!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23302571.post-1158842928880489992006-09-21T07:48:00.001-05:002006-09-21T07:48:00.001-05:00The board is up to no good again!AGAIN!The board is up to no good again!AGAIN!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23302571.post-1158842899773904322006-09-21T07:48:00.000-05:002006-09-21T07:48:00.000-05:00alot of interest please stand by. If anyone is connected with any of them and could offer assembly work, etc, which would be suitable for some seniors, please spread the word and have them post something on this blog. Or at Kings, the laundromat, Oley Dairy, etc. Some of these companies have very simple assembly jobs, already work with seniors, and some even drop off the work and pick it up. The pay is not spectacular, but it's way ahead of spending your days doing nothing, and earning nothing. It is not for everyone, but many involved with this are very happy. May we assume that you have seen numerous patients over the years that took a sudden turn for the worse with a health issue and it changes their whole life. What we can't understand is why it does not seem to matter all that much to the board members, including yourself. Like that other blogger wrote above, you offer possible assistance via a call to you, and finish the thought with.... the man's poor investments were the factor that put him where he's at, not so much the school taxes. Well, that's about one of the most RUDE comments you've spouted off...to date. And we've had plenty from which to choose.
We hope that gentleman is able to stay in his home as long as possible. If it is made possible by renting out rooms, I think the tennants would be very lucky to be there. They would have found a landlord with more heart than most. We're sure this is a real stretch, but why don't you try to put yourself in his shoes. We don't know what his wife did for a living, but it would seem that she was not a teacher. How do you know, Dr. Cappa, if that wasn't exactly what happened to the taxpayer who now finds him self in financial straights. What a cruel assumption you have made.

How can you POSSIBLY understand his or anyone else's difficult circumstances?
